South African World Cup Singer Dies At 34.

Siphiwo Ntshebe

A South African opera singer chosen by Nelson Mandela to perform at the World Cup opening ceremony has died from meningitis, his record label has said.

Siphiwo Ntshebe, 34, was admitted to hospital in Port Elizabeth last week and died on Tuesday, Epic Records said.

He was due to perform his new track Hope at the opening ceremony in Johannesburg on June 11.

Epic boss Nick Raphael said Ntshebe's death was "a tragedy for all those who believe in the power of music".

"He had a truly wondrous voice and his music was unique in its melodies and its messages of hope and compassion," he added.

Epic said Hope was "a soaring track", featuring "a special message of hope and compassion" written and spoken by Mr Mandela.

The track, and an album of the same name, were due to be released to coincide with the World Cup.

Epic said no final decision had been taken on whether the releases would go ahead but that Ntshebe's family wanted his music "to be heard by as wide an audience as possible".

Opening ceremony producer Lebo M said Ntshebe was "a true South Africa World Cup legacy, gone too soon".

"May his spirit lead us to 11 June 2010. May his soul rest in peace and may Siphiwo's spirit of hope centre us all," he added.

The BBC's Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says Ntshebe was relatively unknown in South Africa - his appearance at the World Cup opening ceremony would have introduced him to a much wider audience in his home country.

Ntshebe, who studied at London's Royal College of Music between 2004 and 2007, had performed throughout Europe.

Mr Mandela had previously praised the tenor as "a young South African with so much talent that has, despite challenges of the past, chosen to work hard at a better future".

NBA Play Offs: African Players Come Off Big !

New York, NY - It is that time of the year again in Africa where young kids clinch to their television screens in the wee hours of the morning to catch glimpse of some of their favorite NBA Players but most of all native players from their homeland such as Thunder's Congolese native Serge Ibaka and Bucks Cameroonian native Luc Richard Mbah A Moute. For these players, the scrutiny and pressure to perform is pretty high which is just what they did last Saturday night as their respective teams won crucial play off match up thanks to their input. Luc Mbah A Moute, one of the greatest defenders in the league did not only step up his defense but his offense with 12 points and 9 rebounds to help the Bucks beat the Hawks 107-89 while Serge Ibaka an emerging forward in the league is averaging 6.3 pts per game and 5.3 rebound per game to help the Thunder beat the Lakers 110-89.

Other notable African players such as Luol Deng and Joakim Noah with the Chicago Bulls are also rallying to stay alive in the play offs as the hold Lebron James and the Cavs to a 2-1 series lead with Noah averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds. Though Desagna Diop of the Bobcats and Didier Mbenga of the Lakers are coming off the bench late, their appearance does not only give satisfaction to the African fans who stay up all night to catch a glimpse of them but their contribution off the bench is helping their respective teams to stay contentious.

Vikings Cope With Defeat While Jets Confident Of Next Season

Bret Favre last pass at the dome whick knock off Vikings aspirations for a Super Bowl appearance is perceived as a possible summary of his carrier giving the tenure of the play but what is most heart breaking is the aspiration, the comeback, fall out with the coach and then a lost to the saint which might end up being the last of him. Honestly age is just a number and i will not be surprise to see the legendary quarterback bounce back which is exactly what the Colts did against the Jets who did not only needed time but the talent to over come the might of Payton Manning. Saints vs Colt should be one of the best NFL Super Bowl .

Hello Sports Fans, Whats Up ?.

I’m sure you have heard the news by now; FIFA is going to be hosting the first ever Soccer World Cup in South Africa this summer and the contenders are claiming to bring their A game to the landmark event. But the question on everybody’s mind around the continent is does any African team stand a chance of winning it all ? I would love to say yes, but as you all know is not that easy; I will let you ponder on that while we catch up with the ongoing African Nations Cup in Angola which i must say is full of surprises. There is really no little team in Africa anymore, Cameroon losing to Gabon, Malawi whipping Algeria and Nigeria being spanked by Egypt?. This is really unthinkable given the tenure of these nations when it comes to football in Africa. I almost thought i was being punked with all these shocking results. Speaking of shocking, did you hear the American football (NFL) number one draft pick this year might be from Africa ? I saw some folks on ESPN struggling with his name pronunciation Ndamukong Suh …… while some of the fans back home was still trying to figure if Nebraska is a state or the school he attended. Lets hope that by the beginning of the season they will all figure it out because i hear he’s a machine on the field and very exciting to watch…Is a lot more going on but i aint got all day even though i should say something about the NBA but aint nothing but guns being pulled in the locker room so i’m taking cover and waiting to see if the Yankees are going to have a repeat of their amazing season while MLB plays police in strking steroids out of baseball …..is it spring yet ?...
